Truro Locals Slam King Charles Statue, Saying It Looks Like Mr Potato Head.
TRURO, UK — The recent unveiling of a statue commemorating the upcoming coronation of King Charles III in Truro, Cornwall, has been met with widespread ridicule from the community, with many residents claiming that the artwork bears an uncanny resemblance to the popular children's toy, Mr Potato Head.
The statue, which was unveiled last week in the heart of the city and cost taxpayers half a million pounds, was intended to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III, scheduled to take place this weekend. The clay artwork, commissioned by the Malpas City Council and created by local artist Peter Pardlington, stands at 5 feet and portrays the soon-to-be-crowned monarch.
However, the artwork has quickly become a joke for Truro residents, who argue that the statue is closer to Mr Potato Head than to the future king.
"Half a million for that! It looks like something my 2-year-old son made!" said local business owner, Susan Davies. "We're in the middle of a cost of living crisis and they spend half a million on that piece of crap! I really gets my goat!"
Social media has been flooded with comparisons, with residents posting side-by-side images of the statue and Mr Potato Head to highlight the uncanny likeness. The hashtag #KingPotatoHead has gained traction across various platforms, as Truro locals continue to express their disappointment in the monument.
In response to the backlash, the artist defended his work, stating that he aimed to create a unique representation of King Charles III. "I wanted to capture the essence of the king's character, and the exaggerated features were a stylistic choice," he explained. "I never intended for it to be compared to Mr Potato Head."
Malpas City Council has not yet made a formal statement regarding the controversy, but with public opinion rapidly souring, it is unclear whether the King Charles statue will remain a permanent fixture in the city. As the debate continues, one thing is for sure: this particular piece of public art has captured the attention of Truro residents in a way that few could have predicted.
